Met statue takes a spill

A 15th century Italian stone relief sculpture got a little restless at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City last night or early this morning when it toppled from its moorings and onto the museum's floor. A press release issued by the Met said that the sculpture, while significantly damaged, would be eventually repaired and put back on display in the museum's European Paintings and Decorative Arts galleries.

The sculpture was by the Italian artist Andrea della Robbia and depicted St. Michael the Archangel "holding a sword and the scales of justice."

Perhaps the uneven heavy weight of the sword against the emptiness of the scales of justice threw him off balance?
