WR Kelly not blazing
Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly had his pro-day workout today in Norman, Okla., and he was not blazing. He ran a 40-yard dash time of 4.68 seconds, sources at the workout told The News. NFL.com lists his times as 4.68 and 4.75 seconds. Lee Evans ran 4.37 out of college. Straight-line speed is not Kelly's biggest strength, but the time is not impressive. Bills offensive coordinator Turk Schonert and Bills receivers coach Tyke Tolbert both attended the workout. While Kelly was considered a strong contender to be a top pick right after the college season, his chances of being the 11th pick overall seem to have evaporated, if they ever existed. Might he slip to the second round? Probably not but we'll see. Kelly is 6-foot-4 and 227 pounds. He suffered a partial tear in his quadriceps (thigh) muscle after the Big 12 Championship game. He played only one series of the Fiesta Bowl and sat out the combine workouts. Kelly was hoping to run on Astroturf in Norman but wound up running on FieldTurf, and he reportedly wasn't thrilled about that. Meanwhile, Oklahoma cornerback Reggie Smith ran times of 4.65 seconds and 4.61 seconds, not real impressive. Smith plays better than his speed numbers suggest. And as many scouts say, football is not a game played in shorts and a T-shirt. Smith is a second-round prospect.
