SI predictions for UB
Out this week is Sports Illustrated's annual season preview. It's also available on-line including the ranking of every team in the nation, which like nearly every other preseason publication, doesn't rank the Bulls high overall.
SI has the Bulls at No. 96 overall ahead of Northern Illinois, Temple, Ohio, Eastern Michigan and Akron. SI picks the Bulls to go 4-4 in MAC East play and 6-6 overall. Meanwhile in the Big East SI is predicting another dire season for the Syracuse Orange: 4-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play. DT Arthur Jones, however, is one of the five players to watch this season in the Big East and the mag also lists coach Greg Robinson on the hot seat saying his three-year run with the Orange is the worst in its history.

Somehow, one six-win season has raised people's expectations of UB a little too much. Be happy if the Bulls are just competitive the next couple of years, and then expect a consistent run of winning seasons. Coach Gill has done a tremendous job in a short time and if Willy and Starks stay healthy, this team should contend. But UB will need to stockpile more talent to be a perennial contender in the MAC.

6-6, and 4-4 MAC would not really be progress, given a senior QB in Drew Willy. Maybe SI is just a superficial coverage entity, which should be put on the locker room wall at UB. (e.g. the French swimming relay team gave fuel to the US swimming relay team). A big consideration for me is what comes A.W. (After Willy). If the Bulls go 6-6 or worse with DW, in the MAC at 4-4, a new signal caller will take time to establish.
A lot rides on this season, and more than ever on the Al Golden coached Temple game. It's definitely worth the price of a season-ticket this year.
