Live from St. Joe's hoops wearing down Maple Grove

We're live at St. Joe's for a highly anticipated Maple Grove at St. Joe's contest.

We'll provide updates when we can from our perch above the scorer's table. No chair here, but we'll get our game face on and work through it.

6:59 p.m. Gotta say that I'm disappointed in WNY hoop fans at the moment - the gym is not nearly as full as I expected it to be. Counting down on the clock, we've got five minutes to go. We'll pass on the JV score from the game that just finished as we arrived: St. Joe's 72, Maple Grove 36.

7:10 p.m. We're about to start. A few more fans have filed in. There are only about 12 rowdies here. Maybe everyone's out Christmas shopping or something.

7:23 p.m. At the END OF THE FIRST QUARTER St. Joe's has an 18-14 lead. St. Joe's has had a few transition baskets as seven different players have scored. Chris Secky has seven points, including a smooth jumper, a three-pointer and a nice one-handed floating finish.

7:29 p.m. Maple Grove calls a timeout with 6:41 left in the second quarter. Kyle Wojciechowski just scored a nice fast-break bank-shot to put St. Joe's up, 22-15.

7:38 p.m. St. Joe's calls a timeout with 2:49 left in the second quarter as the Marauders have a 36-26 lead. St. Joe's got the better of a nice stretch of action which we don't have enough time to encapsule here (sorry!).

7:46 p.m. We're at HALFTIME and St. Joe's has a 41-33 lead. Matt Dyrek got the long rebound of his own missed three and hit his second try with about five seconds left for the final basket of the half. Secky and Wojciechowski each have 16 points.

Here's the summary of the best back-and-forth of the half: Evan King came across the lane to block what looked like would be a layup by Maple Grove 6-4 junior Kevin McElrath, sending St. Joe's the other way, where Wojciechowski hit a three-pointer for a 27-19 lead witih 5:40 left. Just as the Marauder fans got loud, Secky hit a three to respond for Maple Grove. Sean Mulhern then it a nice bank shot off a spin move in the lane. After Secky missed a three, he came back on defense and blocked Mulhern in the lane from behind. St. Joe's came back with Wojciechowski hitting a reverse layup off a fast-break for a 31-21 lead. Joe Caporale -- an all-WNY wide reciever -- has shown some nice passing ability, twice whipping no-look passes through the lane that led to points.

8:03 p.m. Maple Grove takes a timeout with St. Joe's leading, 48-38, with 4:51 left in the third quarter.

8:06 p.m. St. Joe's takes a timeout with a 50-44 lead and 3:13 left in the third. Threes by Dan Rivas and Antione Aronson have helped Maple Grove trim the lead some.

8:11 p.m. Maple Grove calls a timeout with 57.1 seconds left in the third quarter. St. Joe's has taken advantage of some faulty MG defense on the last few possessions, using nice passes to find the open man.

8:14 p.m. It is the END OF THE THIRD QUARTER and St. Joe's has a 63-51 lead. Secky was scoreless in the third.

8:21 p.m. With 5:01 left in the game, Maple Grove takes a timeout with St. Joe's leading, 69-55. Secky still hasn't scored in the second half although he just had a nice steal and a behind-the-back dribble before finishing a fast break with a dish to Travis Leburg.

8:31 p.m. We have a FINAL SCORE: St. Joe's 79, Maple Grove 64. Time for interviews and writing.
