Brian Campbell always was a standup guy, but we'll see how many fans whine in the days ahead about him being a greedy player because he had the audacity to stand up to management.
The Sabres were offering him a three-year deal worth $17.25 million, which was laughable. Dan Boyle just signed a six-year extension worth $40 million last night. Campbell is three years younger. He's going to wind up landing a similar average salary. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets seven years for $47 million in the open market.
I don't think Campbell is worth $6 million a year, by the way, but put yourself in his skates. Would you take what the Sabres were offering and tell everybody how happy you were in Buffalo or collect an additional $29.5 million in guaranteed dough somewhere else? It's a no-brainer.
Gee, maybe they should have taken his five-year offer worth $25 million over the summer.
