Hasek in the net

While you're thinking about who you might name as the Sabres' March captain, here's a juicy sublpot to tonight's game: Dominik Hasek will be in goal for the Red Wings. This should be interesting. Long before it became chic to boo ex-Sabres (see Briere, Daniel), Hasek got drilled here when he returned with the Wings and Ottawa.

Hasek is still playing great as his 2.10 GAA would attest. And he's still a lunatic in and out of his crease too. Check out this wild play from December when he stunned Minnesota's Marian Gaborik on a breakaway.

Dominik Hasek was a Buffalo Sabre ("slinky as a spine" ads). He put up a standard that got the lesser talented Sabres to the NHL finals. But he left for other playing pastures. Today's News has a number of complaints by fans writing that Brian Campbell was disloyal. This is a complete misunderstanding on how economics works on the professional level. The NHL players union fired their excutive director after misleading them. The players have a new CBA. Their loyalty is to the CBA, which is about negotiating contracts. There will be winners and losers in the negotiating process. Bucky Gleason writes today that the Blue Jackets had to trade their captain, Adam Foote, to the Avalanche. Loyalty is not a part of business. The Sabres are not a community or family enterprise. It is a business.
The fault of poor contract management lies with the management, primarily the owner...Thomas Golisano. He has been AWOL. He and Quinn, and their stooge....Darcy Regier, are playing by "the CBA rules" as Regier just said. So did Brian Campbell with a capable agent. Campbell did not shed crocodile tears. They were empathy tears for the community. But business before pleasure. Read the News: American Axle workers union has no leverage. That's what it comes down to here. A lack of many knowing the stages of Collective Bargaining and Labor Law. If you take one course in school, take CB....and then approach your boss. You could come out ahead with more $$$ in your pocket. It does work.

Anyone who read the article in the NEWS today about Hasek's Heroes and boos Hasek tonight needs to check his heart and doublecheck his brains. Here's a guy who invested a million dollars and continues to financially support youth hockey, mostly for the underprivileged, in the Buffalo area and fans may boo him because he signed with other teams. He should get a standing ovation.
