One school of thought about Friday's signing of Teppo Numminen is that he's going to be a role player, a 10-12-minute guy who is really more about being a coach on the bench in the dressing room than a rock on the ice.
Not so, said GM Darcy Regier.
"It's a question that's better for Lindy [coach Lindy Ruff] but I don't think Teppo thinks in those terms,‘ Regier said. "He views this as his time to getting back to where he was [two years ago] and that's as a key guy."
The Sabres' top four defenseman heading into training camp are clearly newcomer Craig Rivet, Jaroslav Spacek, Toni Lydman and Henrik Tallinder (the latter two have to be better than they were last year, don't they?). Numminen slides in with Andrej Sekera, who is entering his final year before restricted free agency, and Nathan Paetsch is also back. It looks like Mike Weber is thus going to start the year in Portland.
Assuming Numminen is healthy, is he more like a 20-minute a game guy to you? And what do you think about the Sabres' defense corps now?
