Goose felled

Sabres center Paul Gaustad just left the ice at HSBC Arena after being struck in the face with a deflected shot during practice. Gaustad skated off on his own power holding a towel to his face and escorted by trainer Tim Macre.

Craig Rivet is on the ice practicing as are Nathan Gerbe and Patrick Kaleta. The only player not skating with the team is Tim Connolly.

POST-PRACTICE UPDATES: Gaustad has a good gash on the chin and was going for X-rays (the shot was actually taken by assistant coach James Patrick). Coach Lindy Ruff said Gaustad should be fine.

Rivet, however, is going to be out in "two-week blocks" according to Ruff. Rivet revealed his upper-body injury is to his shoulder and the captain, who was clearly disappointed, said he needs time to rehab the injury because it got tweaked in all three games he tried to play through.
