I'd hate to come off like some bitter, beer-guzzling fool who knows nothing about hockey -- I mean, why would any self-respecting columnist want to say anything negative about the Sabres at this magical juncture in franchise history? I suppose I should emphasize the fact that Golisano's guys have games in hand on most of their Eastern Conference competitors and still have a decent shot of slipping into the Stanley Cup playoffs as an eighth seed.
But is anyone starting to think that this team's talent is a tad overestimated? How many times do they have to score one or two goals before we conclude that it's not some fluke? I had to laugh when they scored 10 the other night. It was so typical of this front-running bunch. No team piles it on like the Sabres. Put them in a 1-1 game in the third period and it's a far different story.
Anyway, I'm beginning to feel that many of these guys are simply overrated. I was trying to put together a list of the five most overrated guys on the team and had a hard time trimming it back to five. On the other hand, it's hard to think of a single player who is actually exceeding his reputation and/or salary this season. Anyway, here are my five main candidates for most overrated:
1. Tim Connolly. 2. Max ("Min") Afinogenov. 3. Ryan Miller. 4. Henrik Tallinder. 5. Thomas Vanek.
