Big day for Hamburg's McLimans

I just wrote up an item for tomorrow's paper about Hamburg grad Blake McLimans, who is expected to make a decision Tuesday to verbally commit to either Michigan or Providence.

That's according to a phone conversation I had tonight with Don Marsh, who coached McLimans in AAU ball with the Northeast Basketball Club. Marsh said he spoke with McLimans Monday. There are also various reports about the 2008 fourth-team All-Western New Yorker, including at the Providence Journal's blog and UMhoops.com. You can see how excited Michigan fans are on one of their message boards. A different message board (one with user icons that don't get linked from a family newspaper) had posts stating that McLimans committed during his Michigan visit this past weekend, which included taking in the Michigan-Michigan State football game.

McLimans is attending prep school at Worcester Academy, and it seems that move has obviously worked out just fine -- even though he hasn't played a game for them yet. The 6-foot-9 McLimans had a tremendous summer, proving his outside shooting game was Division I caliber. Those who saw him play for Hamburg thought he had upside, especially since he hadn't played summer basketball before (he was a standout baseball and volleyball player), and he's certainly followed up on that upside.

Here's a scouting blurb about McLimans at the NBE Basketball Report.

The WNY roots of Michigan coach John Beilein -- the former Canisius College coach and Newfane native -- certainly may have factored in McLimans' decision.

Marsh also reported that Buffalo Arts grad Jerome Hunter has a visit with Boston College this weekend.

The 6-foot-10 Hunter is currently at Queen City Prep in Charlotte, N.C., along with City Honors grad Byron Brown Jr.
